Great summary of the comparisons between two strongmen and the deadly consequences of each. I do believe that Trump is at the very beginning of his downfall though with the multiple court cases against him. He's losing in court and being gagged by judges. It'll be a slow process, but I think it'll finally bring some level of justice. The Republican party, however, will simply move to another strongman and will have to lose multiple election cycles so we can move on.

Just as Netanyahu was not brought down by Israel's legal system, Trump will not bad defeated by ours. Unless Trump is defeated once again at the ballot box, he will be an ongoing threat to our democracy.

Republicans have not meaningfully suffered political consequences thus far, though voters have rejected the most dangerous extremists. If Jordan is elected as Speaker, then extremism will be normalized by voters and the media.

Even those who pay attention are underestimating the extent of our dangerous descent.

I believe a combination of criminal accountability and electoral defeat will be necessary to rid ourselves of Trump. I’m not sure either alone will suffice.

A long time ago there was a kind of "l'internationale des travailleurs". Marx, bakounine, etc. Now we have rising and rising "l'internationale des dictateurs". F@"!k it. And up to now it looks like only a minority understands what is at stake. I am gobsmacked, sad, frustrated and very impatient to see that the orange gangster goes down. Touch wood!

Recognition of the danger, and how quickly it can swamp us, is paramount. Many are still sleepwalking through the rise of a Christian nationalist authoritarian movement right here in the U.S.

Yep. the Dominionists are amongst us. Pence is one, actually.

Birds of a feather. "The King of Israel" and "The Crook of Israel". All you need for a Trifecta is a photo with them and Putin.

The sick, supposed leaders of the countries named are just that: sick, psychopathic freaks who not only need put down but need laws to prevent them ever again.

Great summary. Clear comparison. Thank you.

The real question is will the US learn from the catastrophic events in the Gaza Strip or will they follow a similar path of self destruction.

Expand full comment

I believe that we can learn, but the issue has to be clearly presented. This is in part when I am spending so much time researching and writing on these topics, and doing my small part to warn of the dangers.

Netanyahu is not much more than a vigilante-style street thugh. But, let's not forget how Senator Tom Cotton whisked Netanyahu in under the radar to speak before Members of Congress without Obama knowing Netanyahu was coming. Trump is just one more mark on the traitors' ledger. Trump and Netanyahu thirst after the blood of others.

We didn't listen 30 years ago to Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, and their paths to peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Will we listen now? https://open.substack.com/pub/villano/p/shimon-peres-yitzhak-rabin-and-the?r=cveu&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

“If there are any moderates left within the GOP, now would be the time to find a spine and stop the madness.”

If there are were moderates left within the GOP, they would have stood up before now.

The GOP now consists of the extremists who only want to burn everything to ashes and those who, while no doubt protesting too much that they don’t support the extremists, willingly stand aside to let the torch bearers through.

We’ll see if the 20 who voted no on Jordan hold. I have my doubts.

As do I......the fact that Jordan called in Hannity to pressure them.......Good Lord......

I have no doubts. And “holdouts” will absolutely cave and declare their support for Jordan.

Which goes to my point: There is nobody in the Republican caucus who is not an extremist. Either openly or by enabling and supporting them.

Well, of course they are. That’s obvious.

"Strongmen?" By what definition?

Good at manipulating the worst aspects of human nature, yes, but "strong" is the last word I would use to describe either of them. Well, maybe not the very last word; that would have to be "honest" or "decent."

Strongman=dictator. Not strong man=a man that's strong.

I understand, but I still think it's an ironic term. :-)

Recent events seem to be more than just a "comparison "of trump and bibi. Hamas chose to strike not just when Israel was divided, but when WE--the strongest ally Israel has--are paralyzed. One danger is that Hezbollah will see exactly the same divisions as encouraging a time to strike.

I have no doubt about this
