As a thank you for supporting my new project, on this post I’m keeping comments open to all users, not just paid subscribers. Let me know your thoughts about The Big Picture: what you’re looking forward to reading about, or whom you might want to see as a guest contributor. Or even just say hi! I’m looking forward to chatting with everyone in these threads.
This is quite exciting. I look forward to your continued analysis and wit. I'd love to see more of the big picture, how things connect to each other and what it all means for average folks.
This is amazing, Mr Takei. I love your kindness, intelligence, experience, and wisdom and I’m excited to see this come to fruition. Thank you for a lifetime of fighting the good fight and standing up for human rights. As a mother of an LGBTQ teen, THANK YOU for putting in decades of standing up for this community so that by the time my trans teen reached age, the world was a more accepting and supportive place. We still have a long ways to go, but we have also made so much progress🫶
I’m looking forward to reading your Substack! Dr. Katelyn Jetelina is an epidemiology and public health expert who’s primary area of work is in violence epidemiology. She spent a lot of the pandemic using her training to “translate” the science (or lack thereof) and math of COVID19 into manageable information with her newsletter titled “Your Local Epidemiologist.” I think she might be an excellent contributor for any topics about gun violence, domestic violence, and possibly violence against AAPI.
This was something I didn’t even know I wanted - instantly subscribed as soon as I saw this announcement.
I have such respect for you and all you’ve accomplished through your life and experiences Mr Takei. I’ve been finding it hard to cut through the current bizarre state of things, not helped by being in one of the maelstroms as a trans man. I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say, and feel your outlook will provide some sense of clarity, if not hope for the present and the future.
Hello George, I saw you in Allegiance last weekend. It was an excellent production with some wonderfully talented people. Thank you for bringing this often untold story to London and shining a light on elements of history that should not be forgotten, in fact should be trumpeted so we don't repeat them. I hope the rest of the run goes well. X
Thanks for continuing to make an amazing contribution. As a guest contributor option, I would recommend Dr. Peter Huang, who has been addressing the big picture of racism against Asian Americans (and others). He could be a great contributor to your work. You can read more about him here: https://www.endeavorliterary.com/disrupting-racism
As a follow-up about Dr. Huang, his scholarly book "Disrupting Racism" just went on sale. The book has been endorsed by two Nobel Prize-winning economists. We believe the book will make a unique contribution to this topic because of Dr. Huang's holistic approach. Thanks for all your great writing as well!
when Fox "news" is scared of losing eyeballs, aka $$$, because they are telling the truth, you know they haven't been and subsist on anything but truth.
In fact, any mainstream news source could be accused of such a thing at any point in time (fox "news" and other propaganda outlets take the cake). Dan Rather, Heather Cox Richardson, Jay Kuo and now George Takei and team are providing a light of truth in a very dark and disingenuous world.
Grabbed a yearly subscription at the discount price. Money well spent! I'm looking forward to some thoughtful discussion (almost impossible to find on, say, Twitter) and maybe some calls to action/activism. As always, love your humor and kindness!
Happy to become a monthly subscriber. I'm a long time subscriber to the Oh Myyy! newsletter, and I'm very interested to see what you do with the new format. Great to be here!
Thank you! I love to hear from long time subscribers to my newsletter. We’ve been doing it so long that it’s good to finally get a chance to chat with some of the readers directly here.
Please start with the issue that affects all others: the geo-engineering that has been happening for decades and is destroying the planet. See https://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/ for all the science.
Not only are the plants and animals sick and dying, but the government uses our tax payer dollars to do it, without asking.
I’m excited to see what you will be bringing here. I have followed you, mostly on Instagram, and been frustrated by the hoops the different platforms impose. I know from Jay Kuo’s Substack that this is a much friendlier place. Thank you!
I’ve been following you and Jay Kuo on mastadon for a while now, I’m so glad I’m in a position to subscribe and looking forward to your insights on, well, whatever you want to say.
This is great, George! Thank you! I enjoyed your and Jay's collaboration with Allegiance and I'm looking forward to seeing what gets shared here. Not only because I'm a longtime fan, but because I appreciate your advocacy. I've been an ally for decades, but now as a mom of two questioning kids it's become personal.
I am happy to subscribe to Mr. Takei and Jay Kuo! You are a wonderful team and a beacon of light & hope during these trying times. Thank you for everything!
When you consider $72/y for a single source of content, it feels like a lot. I’d also like to pay for NYT, and other sources, too. But it adds up. I think I’d be willing to pay $20-40/mo in total for trusted content across all sources. But how to spread that around? And advertising alone is a fickle source of funding.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to have a single/central subscription and a way to allocate/distribute points or something to various content providers? Might need some consumption rate metrics; maybe use that to divvy out the fee paid. I’m sure people in the media industry have better ideas about what could work. And I’m sure your team agonize about the current plan.
Thanks for all you do to make a difference.
I saw your post on Mastodon. It’s a pretty welcoming platform.
It’s a whole marketplace of ideas and competing opportunities, for sure. That’s why we’re offering the vast majority of the content free of charge, while volunteers help me support my team. Thanks for being a fan and your thoughts here.

Welcome to The Big Picture, Kelly. Glad to have you here.
I'm very happy to subscribe, Mr. Takei. I'm looking forward to reading your wisdom.
Thank you for your support, Gregg. We’re building something truly special I hope.
Looking forward to it too!

A subject near and dear to my own heart. Thanks for the tip.

Actually, though I am pleased George Takei has joined substack, I have to add Joyce Vance to the commendable list you put together.
Also Robert Hubbell “Today’s Edition Newsletter”
thank you for the recommendation!
It’s a great group to join. Thank you.

Uncle George, I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts. All my best to Brad.
Brad is here in London with me now, in fact!

He will be penning a few articles here each month in fact!
I am happy to subscribe to Mr. Takei and Jay Kuo! You are a wonderful team and a beacon of light & hope during these trying times. Thank you for everything!
Thank you. These are trying times, but we will through them together, won’t we?
Yes, indeed - we will get through it together!

You might want to consider joining post.news. They have a points system like what you describe.
I usually try before I buy but I have seen your work on Twitter (where I no longer visit) so I have subscribed. And - I like Jay's work very much.
Thank you for the vote of confidence. I hope we live up to expectation.
