I did not read this column, despite that I adore Jay. I just can’t. I have done what I can do. Given as much as I can, strategically. Written or caused to be written 4200 post cards, AND paid the bloody postage! And….voted. I watched Harris’ speech tonight. And now, I am going to take the next week off. Head buried in a book, knitting, walking, petting the cat, volunteering at our fabulous Food Depot. I plan to wake up on Nov 6th to a new day, a new world, Madame President Kamala Harris. Make it so!

Wow , thank you

I did 300 post cards. With me paying the postage and it was an arduous process.

I am older and have semi arthritic hands.

I voted. Absentee ballot. Made sure my ballot was accepted.

I read today that in my county 50%of the absentee ballots mailed out have been returned.

Usually in my county maybe 1/4 get returned total.

I too am extremely exhausted.

Rest and vote 💙

Thank you for all you've done.

I was grateful to have a few weeks to get my 200 done. Cataract surgery and arthritic hands could not deter me. Si se puede!🌊💙

Thank you for your work! A blue wave is coming. 💙

I, unfortunately, did read it. It’s depressing. The first order of business ought to be eliminating the filibuster and expanding the supreme court. I’m also exhausted and have done as much as I can.

Kamala's to-do list: 1) Fire Garland's ass. 2) Put Shapiro in the A.G. job. 3) Turn him loose on Trump's ass. 4) Then turn him loose on Musk. 5) Then do other equally great things.

Excellent explanation of what VP Harris is running to accomplish. If more people understood her plans I think she would prevail.

The issue of dealing with a hostile Supreme Court regarding the restoration of reproductive freedom brings a thought to mind. Many people seem to assume that setting term limits on serving as a Justice would require a Constitutional Amendment, probably an impossible hurdle. But some legal scholars have suggested that Congress could legislate an "emeritus" status for Justices, after perhaps eighteen years as active Court members. The emeritus Justices would be assigned supporting judicial functions. The President under the proposed legislation would nominate for confirmation one Justice per each two-year Congressional term as a replacement. (If the President's nomination failed, of course, he or she would nominate another candidate.) After nine Congressional terms eighteen years would have passed, and all the active Court members at the beginning of the period would have reached emeritus status or retired and would have been replaced by new members. Who would have judicial standing to bring a case challenging this legislation?

An impressive wish list BUT, in order to implement any of it, the Ds need to regain control of the House AND maintain control of the Senate. It will be nip and Tucker down the stretch.

Expand full comment

And if they gain control of the Senate, have the intestinal fortitude to finally abolish the undemocratic Senate Filibuster.

Expand full comment

Indeed, Don! Now that Turncoat Joe and Accursed Kirsten are gone, perhaps the Ds can finally achieve this. At the very least, get some strategic carve-outs so that the Rs can't continue to stall needed legislation in its tracks!

Expand full comment

Exactly. Moscow Mitch showed the path to Filibuster carve outs, just follow his script. I'd like to see a majority leader with more spine and actual leadership, and get rid of the indefensible blue-slip B.S. for judicial appointments, and get an actual Democrat that wants to do the job to lead the committee. Schiff has been very close to useless as a majority leader. Probably well-intentioned, but the GQP walks ALL OVER HIM.

Expand full comment

Democrats with the intestinal fortitude to actually exercise the power they have?

Far too few and far between.

Expand full comment

Right now, all we have are pipe dreams, Christopher. We should also remove the Rs from the budget process so that they don't keep holding us hostage and jeopardizing our credit in misguided attempts to extract concessions from the Ds!! This is madness! there are numerous other things but, we should concentrate on the basics, first!

Expand full comment

The Ds need to be far less willing to concede on things. Generally speaking, they’ve refused to take the threats seriously, and back down to readily (obey in advance.

We wouldn’t have many of the problems we do if they were more like Rs in determination.

Expand full comment

Certainly it would be nice if the Ds were less sanguine and more ruthless but, if they go too far down that path, they run the risk of turning into the Rs and becoming obsessed with holding on to power to the detriment of solving problems for the people!

Expand full comment

I disagree. That “fear of us becoming them“ presumes we use their methods rather than just copy their determination.

Holding committee hearings and investigations. Issuing subpoenas AND THEN ENFORCING THEM so they aren’t just a performative hollow gesture. Speaking plainly and calling Republicans out on their shit without fear that doing so would appear to be rude. None of these are Democrats becoming Republicans. All of them are Democrats exercising their powers to uphold the rule of law without hesitation. Unfortunately more often the case is a self-defeating fear that the bullies (Rs and/or media) might say something mean about them and therefore the Ds pulling their punches.

We have much more, vastly more to fear from Ds allowing the Rs to continue to get away with their shit then we do of D’s becoming fascist.

Thank you for highlighting some of the reasons to vote FOR a Democratic administration and congress. The list of reasons to vote against the GQP traitors, scumwads, racists, and sundry criminals is long (and more than sufficient for me), but it is nice to emphasize the positive.

Most importantly - VOTE and get everyone you know to vote. It's much harder to scam a landslide . . .

Looking forward to Harris and her extensions to Biden. Eager for where we will be in eight more years.

Imagine where we’d be today if it had been Clinton-Gore-Obama-Clinton instead of what we got.

This is all very nice but it is contingent on Kamala winning and the Ds controlling both houses of Congress. Without that, nothing much will get done.

Great analysis of her remarks last night. I was impressed at the breadth of her remarks, but most important, saving the immigration piece for the very end. It was bold, poignant, thorough and heartfelt, perfectly placed and well-delivered.

She should also bring Puerto Rico & DC into the US as states for a number of reasons, not the least of which would be the effect on the unequal balance in the Senate.

These fucking people. What do they think would happen in the Middle East if Trump were to be elected? I’ll add an Ukraine. Let’s point the fingers at Biden and Harris, instead of Putin and Netanyahu. I’m not denying that atrocities are being committed in both cases. But the war in the Middle East will never end until Netanyahu is removed. It infuriates me. I mostly just block them.

Expand full comment

Yeah. And they express such concern for genocide (as we all should) but ONLY in the middle east. Putin attacking and kidnapping Ukrainians? They don't care. Genocides in Africa? Not a concern of theirs. China and their genocide the Uyghur population? Not something they ever get self-righteous about.

Clearly it isn't genocide that bothers them. What bothers them is Democrats in charge.

Exactly. Justin Rosario writes about the “alt-left” often.

Democrats and Republicans two cheeks of the same arse. One thing you can be sure of with American elections. Whichever of the halves in your one-party state are elected foreign policy doesn't change. It was democrats and republicans that interfered in Ukrainian politics And provoked Putin to invade. And Israel wouldn't be able to exist never mind commit genocide if it wasn't for the support of both of the ugly sisters

How consistent of you to not care about any genocide at all.

Expand full comment

1. I didn’t say that. But how, like a Russian troll bot to take pretend offensive to something nobody ever said so they can declare themselves the real victim.

2. Notice, folks, how the troll bot doesn’t deny that genocide doesn’t really concern them at all. Because it doesn’t. It’s only of interest when they can use it as an excuse to get self-righteous.

Of course I care. It just makes sense to prioritise the one that both our governments are actively engaged in and one which your government formed of the party that you're calling for people to vote for could stop immediately if it so wanted
