Jay - please forward this clarification to the ACLU, Robert Reich, Meidas Touch, THEY NEED TO STOP TELLING PEOPLE to TELL THEIR Senators & Congress people to vote against the DHS Funding Bill.

So, the meaning of "wonky" covers an understanding of important rulings that impact us in ways that reveal our lack of recourse to correct rulings that trap us in being forced to follow a regulation (law) that endangers many of us who deserve protection?

[I thought that wonky meant ridiculously detailed in a way that did not rally matter to anyone's well-being.]

Uhhh... wonky means crooked or askew or faulty. It is very far removed from having anything to do with being ridiculously detailed, whether it matters to anyone's well being or not...

Thank you, time for me to find out more about the meaning of this expressions!

All good, as the daughter of a lawyer and a librarian, who has herself been a Shakespearean actor for decades, I really like words and their meanings!

(And thanks for taking it in the spirit meant, realised I might have sounded a bit harsh, wasn't the intent!)

Oh, wow! Thanks, Jay, for clarifying that. In today's mail, I received 2 letters one from DSCC and one from Hakeem Jeffries. I did not plan to contribute, but I was going to mail them back with a blistering criticism about "going along to get along", aiding the trump regime in its use of storm troops, fear of offending corporate donors, etc. I'll have to think some more 🤔 considering what you've discovered. I do wish Schumer and Jeffries could be more forceful leaders and get some powerful wins to counter this regime's atrocious actions!

Hush, Jay! You are the FIRST person I’ve seen shine a light on this. That’s the problem with things wonky - people are left in the dark, as intended.

The shadow administration is to no fault of your own.

Trump and his allies are corrupted.!The work you do is critical!!

Thanks. I had looked into reconciliation bill appropriations and found that they could be direct so I was delighted to see you sadly erroneous statement. So it goes. One thing I'd like to see in the part about Body Cameras is that not only should they buy them but also require USE of them with some sort of penalty if in some altercation they don't. Perhaps a denial of qualified immunity if they fail to wear one?

I've wondered if Good might have not been shot if Whosis had not been so busy with the damn cell phone that he felt he couldn't get out of the way,, even though he clearly did so. Scared people do stupid things, though being scared without real reason isn't a defense to use of deadly force.

Wonder if you could post a brief summary of this on Bluesky and/or post a link to the Substack article. People there are all-in to kill the appropriations bill and crucify any Congresscritter that votes for it. It seems that many other sources have made the same mistake and this one is pretty critical, given the timing.

I don’t think you’re alone in misunderstanding this. A lot of us have been writing to Schumer and Jeffries to not fund DHS this month. Democrats really need to clarify this loudly and often.

So to be clear (cuz this confusing!), does this mean that we should NOT be calling for a govt shutdown over ICE funding as the Jan 30 deadline approaches?

Thank you for this excellent information! Does it stink big time? Yes. Is it another example of the underhandedness of the Republican Party & this rotten administration? You bet it is. But now we know. And hopefully we learn.

Thank you for the correction. I was buoyed when I read your article, so this is a painful correction. And I share your "wth?" feelings about why no one made this clear already!

Joan DeMartin's avatar

Yes, thanks for this clarification, but you do incredible work 100% of the time!

Elizabeth Fenlon's avatar

Wow, thank you for the clarification! I had called my congressman and urged him not to approve additional funding for ice. I guess it’s too late for that. But you are right: that important piece of the bullshit bill should have been made clear to us before the spineless congress went along with it.

What continues to be overlooked here is that our corrupt richest are invested in Corecivic, GeoGroup and Palantir and their investments at BlackRock and Vanguard need about 5 years to pay them the return their greed desires. It's always about the greed and buck. Even MTG invested. And probably most of the pedophiles and insurrectionists in Congress. Corruption rules

I appreciate the apology, but don't think it was necessary. It sounds like the appropriations process is now as screwed up as the rest of our government. I'm starting to wonder if we as a country can ever fix ourselves and finally get it right, with equality, liberty and justice (true justice) for ALL.
