This sort of grotesque display is, of course, the point... but I think it's going to backfire.

That is entirely up to us. Let's make sure this costs the GOP all of the votes.

Live by the barrier and die by the barrier. Abbott should have the personal experience.

Let all Texas officials make their position clear. Including Ted Cruz.

“Because this cruelty is all by design”

Exactly. They are not looking for ways to discourage immigration. They are looking for ways to hurt people.

And, addressing the "criminal activity at the border", which is hurting and killing people seeking a better place to live, without actually addressing the known criminal activity of the cartels bringing in drugs and trafficking people for sex, and moving weapons around for money.

This kind of cruelty is what happens when you start to refer to people as “animals”. Immigrants are deserving of respect as fellow humans (and even real animals) and are not deserving of being sliced. Even if an immigrant is found to be not legally in the US, the legal remedy is not torture and/or summary execution!

It's interesting to see the contrast of how local Republicans are reacting with horror to what Abbott is doing, while Republicans on social media are absolutely heartless when it comes to the plight of these asylum seekers. Very telling.

And yet they purport to be right-to-lifers. WTH?

Reading this story turned my stomach. What kind of member of the human race would stoop so low as to employ buoys, nets, razor wire and saw blades to deter desperate people from seeking asylum in our otherwise wonderful nation? What kind of "leader" would deny DRINKING WATER to the men, women (some pregnant) and CHILDREN who happened to defeat his death traps and make it to our doorstep? The obvious answer? No human being with an active conscience would even CONSIDER this level of cruelty against their fellow human being. Therefore, in my opinion, Gov. Abbott is less than human, by his own actions. The only plausible explanation that I can come up with is that this sub-human is consumed by unbearable bitterness caused by the fact that his genitalia must be as dead as his legs. (DISCLAIMER: Under normal circumstances, I would NEVER disparage the handicapped, but I feel fully justified in making this particular exception.)

It was hard for us to report on and publish, too. But we have to keep the pressure on.

Indeed, he is despicable. He is losing even his own die hard fans.

I truly believe that Abbott gets off on the cruelty !! I'm surprised he doesn't sit by the water and watch these poor people/ children/ babies become enmeshed in the razor wire and drown while he drinks his mint julep and one of his co-horts fans him !! He is probably, besides deathsantis and dumpster, the worst douche bag ever and needs to be removed from office and charged with crimes against humanity !!

Certainly seems like it, sadly.

Section 10 of the RHA (33 U.S.C. Sec. 403) prohibits the unauthorized obstruction or alteration of any navigable water of the U.S. This section provides that the construction of any structure in or over any navigable water of the U.S., or the accomplishment of any other work affecting the course, location, condition, or physical capacity of such waters is unlawful unless the work has been recommended by the Chief of Engineers and authorized by the Secretary of the Army.

How is there any question about the lawlessness of this?

Inhumane barely seems enough to describe this instrument of torture... and it’s not just physical torture, it’s mental, emotional, spiritual. Designed to break a person - body, mind, and soul.

Makes me so angry and also makes me want to weep... I’m not sure humanity can be saved. This is barbaric.

So well put. When I read that local Republicans are turning on Abbott's cruelty, it gave me some hope that humanity could prevail over partisanship. We shall see.
