How sad the Party that once prized itself in being the "party of law and order" (questionable) has morphed into the party of lawless disorder. The grotesque impropriety around which the Republicans wrap themselves confirms how they are the party of enemies domestic. I call attention to an AP article in its 29 August edition: "Conservative groups draw up plan to dismantle the US government and replace it with Trump’s vision."
Plus, "With a nearly 1,000-page “Project 2025” handbook and an “army” of Americans, the idea is to have the civic infrastructure in place on Day One to commandeer, reshape and do away with what Republicans deride as the “deep state” bureaucracy, in part by firing as many as 50,000 federal workers."
Our constitutional democratic republic is under siege, fueled by The Heritage Foundation. and super-wealthy conservatives (well-heeled oppressors).
Right you are. I do wish people wouldn’t call these people conservative however. Reactionary or anarchist comes closer. They aren’t conserving anything.
My concern is not just for the job safety of the prosecutors but for the very real, physical safety - for them and their families. I mean.... considering the violent and uncompromising nature of Trump's rabid base.
As for Florida... Draconian abortion laws aside, people are seeing another consequence to electing DeSantis as their governor: the home insurance crisis. Between hurricanes becoming more intense with the global climate change and DeSantis' refusal to acknowledge that reality, insurers are sick and tired of having to pay up, and so, they are pulling out of the state. Those remaining are jacking up their premiums sky-high. Soon enough people will simply not be able to maintain a house in Florida. So, either they'll get angry and turn their legislature around or it will become the biggest, wettest, most broke radical conservative cesspool on the planet.
Considering that deathsantis refused the over 300 million offered by Fema to help his constituents !! Does he have the money or is it only going to be given to the repugnants ??
I have some sympathy for Floridians living under DeSantis, given there are some who didn’t vote for him and are caught despite any best efforts on their part.
But it’s greatly reduced by the fact that he did get re-elected and his policies are blatant. Yes, “Moms for America” or whoever is helping ban books, but every time the speak up at a school board meeting why aren’t they out shouted by vastly more people opposing them?
Floridians have gotten what they voted for and/or what they are unwilling to stand up and oppose. Through their own fascism or indifference. It’s their bed.
How many Floridians do you personally know? Have you walked a few miles in their shoes, especially the non voting Floridians.
You make pretty bold “generalists” comments lacking in empathy and not accounting for the fact that Rhonda Santis almost lost the first election, and that thing called gerrymandering…which pretty much plagues the entire nation.
You make some pretty bold assumptions, especially considering 45% of this country are Independents, and the Mussolini of Tallahassee is second choice on the GOP billet. What does that mean for the general election?
It’s like you are a part of the liberal 2016 echo chamber all over again. How did that turn out? I assume you spend a great deal of time volunteering with grass root voting organizations.
In the words of Joyce Vance. “We’re in this together.” Your dismissive tone, however, sounds as if you have that first class X ticket with Elon Moist to Mars.
You’re making some very broad assumptions and generalizations yourself while complaining about what you see as mine. And you call me dismissive while you offhandedly dismiss what I wrote by claiming I’m stuck in some kind of echo chamber. Do you feel hypocritical at all?
As I wrote before, I recognize there are many people who have been actively fighting a good fight, and despite their best attempts are stuck in bad situations. For them, I have nothing but respect, sympathy, and continued encouragement.
But for those who offer up gerrymandering or any other excuses in an attempt to absolve themselves and the majority in Florida (or anywhere) for their inactivity and their role in letting things get to the state that they are in, I don’t.
I wonder if they can elaborate on why they think Fani Willis has politicized things - simply because she’s going after a bunch of criminals who happen to be republicans?
But to them it’s all marketing. There doesn’t need to be any truth behind it. They will never be called out enough, and they will never all face consequences for their lies
“I wonder if they can elaborate on why they think Fani Willis has politicized things”
Of course they can’t. They don’t even bother to try.
Republicans know enough of what’s right or wrong to know what is an acceptable sounding reason to oppose something. It’s not their reason, but it’s the one that they know will sound ok. (The marketing you mentioned.)
Hence, they want Fani Willis stopped because she’s following the law but can’t say that so they latch on to “politicizing”. They want to control women’s lives so they latch on to the acceptable sounding facade of “rights of the unborn”.
“... in the latest sign of their anti-democratic drift.”
What “drift”?
When someone aims the boat at the dock and moves the throttle to full, would you say “Gee, looks like their drifting toward the dock.”?
Never ceases to amaze me how liberals will soften their language to avoid calling Republicans out on their shit. Are you afraid speaking the truth plainly will seem impolite and offend the fascists?
To me, it’s a drift. That’s why so many Americans don’t recognize it as dangerous. It is happening over many years, and it is increasingly extreme. I am not softening language. I am being precise in expressing my views.
It’s been the direction they’ve been going for at least 50 years. So, yeah, something they’ve been “drifting towards”.
But the fact remains that they have now stepped on the throttle and pumped in the nitrous.
However long it’s taken them to get up to speed, they are no longer drifting.
I maintain that continuing to describe it as a drift, while maybe accurate from a “over the course of 5 decades” perspective remains a disservice to your readers. It suggests the pace is still a drift, and it’s not. It misrepresents the current situation.
I dunno. I had multiple conversations with conservatives in the 1970s and 80s that included the phrase “I WILL say ONE thing for the Soviet Union” followed by like five minutes of unstinting praise for the Soviet Union.
Just also as the drift Jay alludes to is relevant.
Perhaps a better analogy than drift are the lobsters in a pot of water.
Historical context is helpful. Drift in this instance, and historical reference, going back to how modern day GOP was formed in the 60’s with the southern strategy. Of course the more method than tool way of viewing the American exceptionalism our country was founded on really gets at the propensity for drift.
Drift did not occur in 2015 under the Cheeto Dust King. tRump is only a distraction to understanding the drift America has undergone; and by extension of the Republican Party being a lie.
A former GOP political operative named Stuart Stevens wrote a book about the drift. Or grift even. It’s titled, “It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump”
It’s a good read. Especially for folks stuck in partisan politics.
I definitely think Monique Worrell's investigation into law enforcement officers should continue. Can the feds pick up where she left off? Is there any chance that they will? If they are short-handed, well, she's looking for a new job.
If the LEOs have abused people, they have violated their civil rights. Would that work to get federal jurisdiction? I just really want cops who abuse their power to be brought to justice.
So reminiscent of the Nazi Sondergericht (people's court) set up outside the German Constitution in 1934.... it was much easier than sending constitutional judges and prosecutors to concentration camps.
It will be amazing to see some of these folks held accountable, whether in criminal court or at the ballot box. We need to continue calling this out every single time we see it. It's among the most important work we can do.
We can call out and certainly should. But there’s a lot we can do beyond just pointing. Vote (of course). Encourage others to. Join community activist groups. Participate in phone banks to help get the word out like all those ahead of Ohio’s recent vote. Be a frequent caller to you various representatives offices telling them how you want your representative to vote. Responding to opinion pieces and articles in the news media to let them know when you agree/disagree. Etc etc etc.
Yeah, you're right. I was a little quick in my response. I meant to imply that this is the way to call attention to it, that doing so is very important so that people are galvanized. But yes, this is just one piece of the puzzle, as you rightly point out.
“For the Commission to have any real credibility ...”
I can’t speak for the Commission, or about individual Georgia Republicans, but the general attitude of Republicans nationwide is that you don’t need credibility if you have power.
What do you think of Jim Jordan's move to "investigate Fani Willis?" He's dressed it up with all sorts of specious junk about the relationship of the judicial systems of the states and the feds. I kinda hope he goes through with a letter like he sent Bragg. Fani Willi's response will be a prize: nasty, brutish, and short.
"Laws for thee but not for me," says the Republican Party. These examples cited so obviously show that the Republican Party cares only about the Cult Leader and that no laws apply to the Cult Leader. This should convince anyone (excluding MAGA types who populate the Cult) that they should vote against Repuplicans up and down the ballot.
Its hard not to be terrified. Seems they will stop at nothing, so hopefully a successful outcome of the trials will be a message about "law and order". But i fear we are too far gone.
Thank you for the detailed overview. I'm glad that there still seem to be a least a couple adults in the GQP. Hopefully they can keep the insane fanatics in control.
The GQP has proven that they are clearly not the "law and order" party (just as they are VERY much not the "fiscally responsible" party). This needs to be featured prominently in election ads and billboards this fall. Use their own words and actions against them (like their votes against very popular and effective policies).

The playbook is there for us all to see, too.
"Seeing" it and then doing something about it should be automatic. Yet, it is not.
No it's not.
Anaethestized Americans that don't know their own political system
I have seen references to the playbook, but have found no links, Jay. I would like to read it, probably screaming as I do.
Right you are. I do wish people wouldn’t call these people conservative however. Reactionary or anarchist comes closer. They aren’t conserving anything.
Yes I agree BUT now the Judiciary holds the key?
What if the Judiciary realises their power?
There are many Lawyers (as we have seen) break Laws for politics.
Power is power!
I bet those job losses will be in the justice department and IRS !!!

Kemp today has come out with remarks saying he will not support her removal by the Commission. It’s good news!

All I can say is, WOW! Whatever happened to honesty?
honesty, according to the gospel of Drumpff, is for losers. Winners cheat, and lie, and recognize no authority binding them.
SO old fashioned... apparently.

Yes. You are being precise.
It seems there is now ONLY the Judiciary that can make a difference.
BUT in the US it all comes down to money and power.
Is the President now owned by the Judiciary?
It’s always been the judiciary.
When I hear the gung-ho types say “If you value your freedoms, thank a soldier.” my immediate though has always been, “No, I thank the courts.”
They’ve been more essential to protecting my freedoms than the military.
I dunno. I had multiple conversations with conservatives in the 1970s and 80s that included the phrase “I WILL say ONE thing for the Soviet Union” followed by like five minutes of unstinting praise for the Soviet Union.

Wouldn't what the GA legislators are doing be considered obstruction of justice? I'm sick to death of these criminals.
Not if there are laws permitting that behavior…
Oy!
Which, of course, they themselves are able to pass.
Its hard not to be terrified. Seems they will stop at nothing, so hopefully a successful outcome of the trials will be a message about "law and order". But i fear we are too far gone.
