Thank you for writing about this issue. As a 71 year old woman I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t subjected to sexual discrimination, harassment and assault in different degrees. I’ve been called every insulting word that men use against women, usually because I disagreed with the man or won’t do as he wanted. I’m so very tired of it all. I definitely agree with your comments about other men not being silent to this behavior. If men do not agree with this behavior they need to speak up and support women. They have to accept the fact that this behavior is absolutely wrong. It isn’t funny and it isn’t okay.

It’s far past time that more men spoke up to support women. That’s one of the reasons we wanted to highlight this piece. Thank you for your voice and your courage.

Thank you for this focus. Most local court system have a dedicated Judge in a specific Courtroom to hear "TRO's" which are not difficult to apply for with the needed specifics. date, time pattern of behavior. In my jurisdiction there would be line of women waiting to apply for such a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) in the early afternoon..

It's just a 1st Step, creates an evidentiary record for a much wider range of sexual harassment, batteries & worse. I never had one of my Applications for a Client not GRANTED. Go for it.

This speaks to the issue of updating laws to keep up with technology. Not all states/countries address online harassment and threats the same way they would ones received by phone, letter or in person.

Many threats are also made anonymously, so ensuring tech companies cooperate with law enforcement to identify harassers is also necessary. While a much easier option is to deplatform these individuals. However in my experience when I report threats or hate speech to Facebook or Twitter, I only ever get back their automated message saying it doesn't violate their rules. The AI they use to evaluate complaints is so useless you have to question if it's deliberate.

Thank you for this eye opening article. I have experienced some of the bad mouth action from men when I posted factual info to counteract false info on Twitter.. but I had no idea that female journalists have to endure so much of it.

I agree that the best way to counter these objectifying, insulting words if for men to stand against it, loud and clear!

Thank you for this post. It makes me profoundly sad and extremely angry. I am now retired but worked most of my life in predominately male fields. There were times I was the only woman present. There were jerks who harrassed me but lucky for me there were more men who had my back and respected me.. Thank god. Tech companies need to be held accountable.

Beginning with the tech companies makes sense, I agree. They need to better police the behavior of abusive users.

Generally, I find Platform "moderation departments" NOT to be knowledgeable about basics contract law or let's call it their "terms of agreement" starting with absolutely no understanding of the applicable "choice of law" clause. Are we talking applying CA law like Substack Inc?

What about the "dispute resolution clause" often referenced by the bold letters, "ADR" meaning alternative dispute resolution. Note, Substack Inc. uses JAMS in SF. JAMS is a nationally known company that has many mediators capable of applying Platform Liability Law including one Mediator that has tried such as case before a SF jury.

Under CA law, statements in mediation are protected from use in any other forum. You get a friendly space to flesh out real disputes in a digital Community.

Please post any "automated" statements by Facebook or from Elon's latest toy. These issues are hot with several pending Platform cases before scotus now. However, I expect little progress from the Thomas Court.

George, I am so glad you brought this out! (btw I help with George's One Pulse for America gun law reform group).

In the course of my reporting and campaigning (about eg Trump in Scotland, the UK), I know well what it is like to be threatened, screamed at (once at a stabbing crime scene I was covering), and get abusive messages. One man wrote to me "you better not come to the US where we can get our hands on you.. you would be in a field picking cotton where your fingers could be put to good use". I reported this to police; they tracked the man down, and he folded like a cheap suit.

Are Trump supporters often filled with rage and hyperbole? One woman emailed to call me "a traitor to Western Civilisation."

The fact is women journalists get much worse than I've had- arrests, unlawful detention, physical abuse, rape, torture, and even death.

When Trump called the press 'the enemy of the people' it was to discredit the facts reputable journalists put their safety on the line to bring us facts.

Thanks again.
