2023 isn’t normally considered an “election year,” but there are still many local and municipal elections being held all around the country.
This past week saw some dramatic Democratic election wins, continuing a trend we’ve seen since the Supreme Court’s disastrous Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade last year.
First, the mayor’s race in Colorado Springs, which has traditionally been a conservative stronghold.
Yemi Mobalade—a Nigerian immigrant who ran as an unaffiliated Independent—won the race by 15 points.
Mayor-elect Mobolade will become the city’s first elected Black mayor.
Meanwhile, Democrat Donna Deegan also prevailed as mayor in another right-wing stronghold: Jacksonville, Florida.
